It was rather overcast the day we went to the mobile home park in the next town over, but the bright colors on the mini house built as a home for books for this little community made us not really pay much attention to the occasional drop of rain. The good natures of those who had helped build the book house (who did such a fantastic job) and were installing it made for a fun time. Getting to fill this new library with books that had been donated to The Book Drop branch of The Encouragement Project was an absolute joy.
One of the new outreaches from our local church is aiming to build relationships with people in lower income situations, and those in need here where we live. It is quite surprising how many nearby neighbors we have in these circumstances. As part of this mission, a group from the church heads out once a month to provide a free cookout, clothes and toys and such, and games and conversations for the residents of several mobile home parks close by. It is really a great effort, and, after hearing some comments from our new friends, a real blessing — for all involved.
With the desire of The Project to do what we can to help where there is a need, we made the decision to donate the cost of several book houses for these neighborhoods, so the children especially would have more access to reading materials. It’s just another connection from the church to the people. Some of the books that you all have donated to The Book Drop are now happily housed in one of these little boxes, ready to be borrowed and read. A second book house will be installed at the next outreach at another mobile home park in April.
I’ve heard so many times from people all over that they often feel like they don’t have the abilities to do much to help people and affect their lives. That perspective has always bothered me, which is one reason The Encouragement Project was created. God has given each of us exactly what we need to impact the lives of those around us. It is really up to us to actually put these gifts to use. The opportunities are there! To get this job done, we had builders and painters and willing helping hands and givers of funds and donaters of books. Everyone is needed and can be a very special part of what God is doing where you are. Won’t you join in?
There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
There are different kinds of working,
but the same God works all of them in all men.
